A member asked:

What are other medications for surgery other than carbimazole and propylthiouracil (ptu) and how effective are they?

Don't understand: These drugs are used in the treatment of hypothyroidism. I am assuming you mean are they effective in the treatment of hyperthyroidism. That is something you need to discuss with you physician and endocrinologist. There are many causes of hyperthyroidism and it will depend on that.

Hyperthyroid : These anti thyroid medication are used to treat hyperthyroidism primarily grave's disease. Ptu (propylthiouracil) now has a black box warning on it in the us because of some patients developing liver failure on it. Few stay in remission once off of meds. Many endocrinologists in the us favor radioablation of the thyroid for permanent treatment for those eligible. Surgery usually not 1st choice.
