PMD 1st: Start with your primary care doctor. They usually can treat this very effectively. If you have a recalcitrant case you may need to see a rheumatologist.

Either is OK: Any rheumatologist is an expert in managing gout. Many internists feel comfortable managing routine cases of gout because it is so common. However, some internists prefer to refer complicated cases to a rheumatologist. As an initial step your internist can evaluate you and refer you to a rheumatologist if they feel it's appropriate.
