Long enough: Elevate the affected extremity as much as possible until swelling decreases. Postop swelling is not unsual. Elevation and gentle digital range of motion are a few simple steps to help decrease swelling (edema). Placing the hand above the level of the heart (e.g. Left chest) allows gravity to facilitate the edema control. A tight postoperative dressing may also be carefullly loosened.

Typically: 2-3 days is when swelling reaches amaximun so the first 4 -5 days are the most important for elevation. Moving your fingers ( if allowed ) is just as important, not just a little finger twitch ot flap of the hand but making a full fist and extending all the way out helps push the fluid out of swollen digits. ( again only is permitted -----so ask your surgeon).
