A member asked:

Is it possible to spread group strep b virus through skin contact to my newborn granddaughter?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

Unlikely to be a pbm: Group b streptococcus is a bacteria (not a virus) that is commonly found in the intestines & occasionally within the mucous membranes of the female genital tract. It is occasionally transmitted to a baby during the birthing process by a mother who carries the germ. It can cause blood poisoning or meningitis. It is rarely passed through other forms of contact.Routine hand washing can prevent spread.
