See below: Sepsis is caused by bacteria that may enter the bloodstream from any point of infection in the body - pneumonia, urinary tract infection, infected wounds or abscesses etc. The body tries to fight infection by producing cytokines but these substances also have many side effects which cause the unpleasant reactions.
