My father died of rectal cancer. i had a colonoscopy at ages 50 and 55. they were clear. my next is scheduled for 2017.. should it be sooner?

No: Go with the advice of your gastroenterologist. Most likely you do not have hereditary colorectal cancer if you do not have polyps on two consecutive colonoscopies. A consultation with a genetic specialist may be helpful if you are in doubt.

No: 10 year follow up after a colonoscopy is routine. It depends when your father was diagnosed with colon cancer. Still yet, you are at an age that any colon cancer you would get would, for the most part, be considered sporadic rather than familial.
