Depends: If your gm is the only family member with colon cancer, then you should begin screening at age 50 and then every 10 years if normal. If 1 or 2 adenomas <1cm = 5 year followup. If 3 adenomas or 1 adenoma >1cm = 3 year interval.

Average Risk: Your grandmother died at an age that would not classify her as a familial form of colon cancer. Without knowing anything else, you fit the average risk profile and should be screened every 10 years starting at age 50.

Yes, over 50 : Every one over 50 years should undergo colonoscopy. If there is a history of colon cancer in the family, it can be done earlier. The biggest discomfort is the bowel prep to get ready for test. If you don't want a colonoscopy , it can be done by ct scans and performing virtual colonoscopy. Early colon cancer usually begins as a polyp and is curable. Colonoscopy is generally repeated every 5 years.
