Otherwise, the doctor may refer one to a orthopedic (bone specialist) doctor for a bone or joint injury, to a rheumatologist (autoimmune specialist) doctor for a rheumatoid arthritis problem, or to both an orthopedic and infectious disease specialist if a bone or joint infection is suspected.
