You should be : Asking your surgeon that question. If it does not hurt you there may be no reason to touch that toe. Part of a consent form is understanding a surgical procedure. It is apparent you do not understand your operation and should get further information from your doctor, preferably before the day of the surgery.

Probably: Hammertoe correction of the 2nd toe (next to the big toe) is sometimes needed for correction of a high-pressure area at the 2nd metatarsal head or contraction of the toe. You doctor may have explained this to you as shortening the toe. Actually, she is most likely correcting/preventing a biomechanical imbalance in your foot. If you are not comfortable, talk to her and get a 2nd opinion.
