Paronychia: The description suggests a Paronychia, which is an ingrown toenail injuring the adjacent tissue and causing pain and infection. Mild forms often respond to warms compresses and home care but you should have a physician evaluate your condition as you may need antibiotics and possibly removal of part of nail.
