The pain may: Be secondary to a bursitis, if the pain is that severe an injection may be warranted. It is plausible, you may have gout if there is unbearable pain with a small bunion. The podiatrist should also check for hallux limitis which could cause pain as bone grinds on bone.

Have it evaluated: Some conservative options include anti-inflammatory medication, pain medication, steroid injection, padding, strapping, orthoces, and wider shoes. Surgery can be considered if you have exhausted your conservative options.
