Depends on dose: Remeron (mirtazapine) max dose is 45 mg Elavil may b 300 mg (depending on liver function & blood level of the drug. The lowest dose of Remeron (mirtazapine) (15mg) tends to b more sedating than the higher doses because it doesn't start raising norepinephrine until 30 mg and this has a stimulating. Effect that counters some of the sedation. Both Remeron (mirtazapine) & Elavil should b taken a couple hrs before bedtime to reduce hangover.

Both: Both are antidepressants with sedative properties that may last for extended periods of time - this effect is tolerated differently by each patient. If you are using this medication only as a sleep aide other medications may be less sedating (like ambien).

Elavil/remeron: This depends on the dose and your tolerance. Remeron (mirtazapine) has longer half life though.

Individualized: Elavil is more predictably sedating, Remeron (mirtazapine) can be and is for some people, not for others. Remeron (mirtazapine) is a more complex medication in that respect. So it's best to try things out and experiment a bit, under expert supervision, of course!
