The nasopharynx is : The posterior portion of the oral cavity above the palate; the pharynx is the back of the throat. It's possible for formula to go up & out the nose with an intact palate, but your pediatrician will use a tongue depressor to watch baby's palate move when he cries. Small notches in the back of the soft palate or "tenting" of the palate (submucus cleft) are hard to see, so he may consult an ent.

All babies spit up!: First , all babies spit-up. They eat only liquid, their tummes are not very big, so when they burp, it's usual for some to come out with the burp. The anatomy of a newborn is difernet than that of adults, even older kids. Their esophagus lines up a bit different with the back of the throat and back passage to the nose, so when stuff gets in their throat, it is very likely to come out the nose too!
