Sounds like he's : Coughing hard & has pleuritic chest pain; irritation of the lining around the lungs. Is he up-to-date on his immunizations? There have been some whooping cough (pertussis) outbreaks & older kids don't necessarily " whoop." he needs to see his pediatrician, who'll probably get a chesr xray & labs. Sadly, you shouldn't give him anything to suppress the cough unless his doctor gives the okay.
