Alveolar Atelectasis: The lung units are air sacs called alveolae which are prone to collapse due to inadequate inspiration and low chest volume. In response to collapse the nerves in the lung send stimuli to breathing center in brain for a large effort of breath like a sigh to re inflate the collapsed air sacs as a protectivereflex. This causes catch in breath in some cases.
