TMJ: If your ear hurts and there are no obvious ear causes of ear pain, it may be that you have ear pain that is being referred from elsewhere. This can be from a throat infection or from your temporomandibular joint. Temporomandibular joint dysfunction which is an arthritis of your TMJ can present as an earache. It can also arise from grinding your teeth or your bite being off from dental work.
