Both: Both are safe when appropriately used. The main difference between the two is lipid solubility, and thus, time to onset. Nifedipine is water soluble and has reasonably quick onset, but also the levels will waver through the day. Amlodipine (or norvasc) is lipid soluble, takes about a week to ramp up in effect, and has a nice steady state effect.

20: They can be used interchageably.Nifefipine in my experience is strongerand causes elevation of the heart rate. Norvasc (amlodipine) is well toleratec except for swelling of ankles.
