Being thorough: We are in an era of procedures. The more we look the more we find. The more we find the more we have to look some more. The white spots may be small scars. These may cause abnormal discharges from the brain but a prolonged eeg may be necessary to pick them up. Have your doctors explain the reasons before consenting to procedures.

Short lived events: An eeg is only able to capture events that occur while the leads are attached. Ambulatory eegs allow longer-term monitoring to capture these infrequent events more reliably. One typical application is spells that might be seizures- if the eeg during a typical spell does not show seizure activity, that argues strongly for another cause.
