Infection: It might be skin infection. These days, we always worry about mrsa. See your physician for further evaluation and treatment.

Skin lesion: Is the outer border slightly raised & scaly? Does the center look like relatively normal skin? May have ringworm (tinea corporis) a mind skin fungus. Can try otc antifungal cream like Lamisil (or generic terbinafine). Rub in thoroughly, wash hands. Treat for at least a week after lesion has disappeared. Wash clothing/bedding/towels that touched it. If not improved, see doc. Keep area dry.
