Tic? habit?: A sudden inspiration without associated shortness of breath could be a tic or a type of habit. If there are repetitive non stop sudden breaths that would be more significant but intermittent sudden breaths makes me think of either a tic or a habit.

Anxiety: sighing?: Taking voluntary sudden breath is not related to asthma. Asthma is reactive airway disease in which there in a narrowing due to some trigger; the problem shows up as a wheeze when you try to exhale. Involuntary sudden breath is similar to sighing, which is often an indication of anxiety and an expression of some unresolved issue. I do not think that has any connection to vascular disease.
