Kidney stone: From the timing, it sounds like a kidney stone. There is some association between alcohol and kidney stones, though not conclusive, but the idea is that the increased urine output from alcohol causes dehydration, which promotes kidney stone formation. The hip/groin is the classic referred pain area for "renal colic", as it's called.
