Confirm Diagnosis: Shoulder blade pain can have many sources including neurogenic pain coming from the cervical or thoracic spine as one of the possibilities. http://www.theshouldercenter.com/suprascapular-nerve.htm will give you some more information. We often also see this area of pain for patients with shoulder pathology. I would suggest making sure you are comfortable with a diagnosis before moving ahead.

Steroid injection: He presumes it is an intercostal nerve pain mainly. It may be used as a diagnostic test. If it is going away then this is it. If not probably he will look somewhere-else. It is safe. The dose is small. I would look for another opinion through.
