Trichomonas Culture: Cultures are the gold standard for diagnosis of trichomonas vaginalis. This is the protozoan parasite that causes trichomoniasis. A liquid medium in a clear pouch can be inoculated with a specimen. The results are usually available in 2 - 5 days. A wet mount looking microscopically for moving trichomonads is the fastest method.
