ALT: Alanine aminotransferase is an enzyme that is found in blood serum and in some tissues, most notably liver cells. It is commonly measured clinically in the diagnostic evaluation of liver injury. It can be significantly elevated in a variety of entities, including diabetes, heart failure, hepatitis, myopathies and other entities. When found, one needs to determine the reason for the elevation.
