UNKNOWN TRAUMA: Sometime there may be trauma you did not remember.If it is only an isolated one toe, you need not worry.Make sure it is not from ill fitting tight shoes other causes are fungal infection, common in immunocomprised patient and diabetics.Rare cause is melanoma.

Shoes or fungus: Microtrauma can cause bruising of the nail, and wearing narrow toe or other dress shoes can put a constant pressure on the nails, causing a bruise to develop. Fungal infections of the nail can also darken a nail quite a bit. If it came on rapidly, and is growing, it might represent a skin lesion under the nail. Get it checked by a podiatrist or dermatologist for your answer.
