Alternative drug?: May use a "steroid sparing drug" to decrease the need of steroid, in sarcoidosis of the nervous system Hydroxychloroquine (plaquenil) works best. Steroids make you gain mostly by increasing appetite and making you lazy and slugish, both can be helped , to a certain extent, by will power and vanity!
