Rare disease: Poor sleep (insomnia) is extremely common, and can be caused by anything from stress, depression, poor sleep hygiene, or other medical problems. Fatal insomnia is very rare. You should see a doctor to discuss your symptoms and discuss what interventions may be helpful.

NO - but: I agree with Dr. Haug. From the number of submissions you have made about Sporadic Fatal Insomnia it is clear that you are obsessing about this. Your doctor can order a polysomnogram if it is medically indicated. There are many causes of insomnia besides SFI. I encourage you to try not to focus on this fear. This is an extraordinarily rare condition.
