WHAT TO DO: Did the stress stop? Has your way of handling it changed? You have this response to dr visits - if dr visits are upsetting enough to spike bp, probably other things are too. If that's so, the issue is stress and how to change the stress or your response to it. If you can do it alone, good. If not, time for some help. Counseling or therapy.
