10 years or more: How long a filling lasts depends on several factors. A tooth-colored filling should last 10 to 15 years before it needs to be repaired or replaced. A silver filling can last twice as long. New decay, heavy wear, and other ouside forces can reduce the useful life-span of a filling.

Life of fillings: Some of my patients still have intact fillings that I have place over 25 years ago, and some chip or break in weeks if they are abused. There is no specific life expectancy for fillings. It depends upon the size of the filling, type of material used, location in the mouth, type of occlusion, habits such as clenching and grinding, and surrounding tooth structure, among many other factors.

They can last..: Fillings are one of the great mysteries in this business. If you have good oral hygiene and keep up regular dental visits..I have seen fillings older than me (i'm 60). For a few lucky people who neglect their teeth and don't care...Fillings can last, thought the teeth may be falling apart all around the fillings. If a filling fails..You get a new one or may need a crown. But..Don't fret til time.
