Hgb/Hct: Hemoglobin (HGB) is a protein that contains/binds iron in red blood cells (rbcs). This metalloprotein (metal containing protein) transports oxygen. Hematocrit (hct) is the volume percentage (%) of rbcs in blood. It can be determined directly by spinning a capillary tube of blood in a centrifuge. In a CBC it is usually determined by multiplying the red cell count by the mean cell volume (mcv).
