What is the definition or description of: underbite?

Protruding jaw: In the typical alignment of teeth the upper teeth slightly overlap and protrude over the lower teeth. This increases the efficiency of the bite by allowing the teeth to have maximum surface contact during chewing. In variations of this normal bite relationship, an underbite is when the lower teeth protrude beyond the upper teeth.

Underbite: An underbite can be a combination of underlying causes. The typical underbite is usually caused by the lower jaw growing at a faster forward rate than the upper jaw, or the upper jaw not growing as fast as the lower jaw, or a combination of the two. Also, there could be a 'dental' underbite caused by the bottom teeth being ahead of the top teeth with jaws growing normally.

Lower jaw protruding: In simple, non-technical terms, think of it as having your lower teeth either even with or protruding out beyond your upper teeth. A proper bite should have your upper teeth extended ever so slighly in front of your lower.

Lower out: An underbite or underjet is typically indicative of a skeletal discrepancy between the 2 jaws with the lower teeth (and jaw) forward of the upper teeth (and jaw). Seeing an orthodontic specialist will help to determine the best course of action for your particular situation.
