Ortho and surgery: It usually requires the team of an orthodontist and surgeon working together to change the bite. It also depends on what is wrong and how bad the underbite is.

Underbite: Depending on the severity of the underbite it may be possible to move the teeth into a new position with orthodontics (braces). If severe then a surgical procedure may be possible where either the upper or lower jaw is cut and repositioned. It would then be wired shut to allow healing . This procedure can be very successful and life changing but has risks. Talk to an orthodontist.

Team work: If your underbite is dental, your dentist an an orthodontist working together may be able to solve the problem. If it's a jaw issue as well, an oral surgeon gets added to the team. If your supporting tissues are compromised, a periodontist joins the team. Start the process by asking your dentist to refer you to an orthodontic specialist for an initial examination. He will be ableto guide you.

Consult your doctor: There are varying degrees of underbite. Some are dental in nature and can be treated with orthodontic braces alone. Others are bony in nature and require surgical repositioning of the jaw/jaws in conjunction with orthodontic treatment to effectively address the problem. Only an orthodontist or oral surgeon can best answer your question, consult one of these doctors.
