See below: Intraoral vertical ramus osteotomy . An incision is made inside your mouth (pretty far back). Then a vertical cut is made in the ramus of the mandible (the vertical part of the mandible) to allow the surgeon to move the mandible (lower jaw) back (behind the upper teeth) into normal position.

Complex Surgery: Ivro stands for intra oral vertical ramus osteotomy. That is part of the lower jaw bone that is the furthest back on the cheek and you can feel the lower turn and go vertically. Forward of this border is where the surgery is done. This a more complex procedure and you should really seek a good orthodontist first to discuss the options with you and have them refer you to a oral surgeon for more....

A surgical approach: Ivro means intraoral vertical ramus osteotomy. The term intraoral means that the surgical approach will be inside the mouth. Vertical describes the direction in which the incisions will be made(up and done).Ramus describes the area of the bone where the surgical incisions will be made, and is the vertical portion of the l-shaped part of the lower jaw. Osteotomy is the term for excision of bone.

Team needed: As described well in the other answers to this question, ivro is one of many procedures available to the surgeon for jaw malrelationship correction. Proper treatment usually requires team of dentists, including your family dentist, an orthodontist, oral surgeon, and sometimes periodontist. Surgery alone will not "fix" underbite in most cases. Need orthodontist to make teeth fit also.
