Bone pulled off: An avulsion fracture is typically a small break in the bone that is caused by the pull of a ligament or tendon that is attached to the bone. This is usually because of the speed of the injury or the quality of the bone in the area. One example is with an ankle sprain in which the inside part (deltoid ligament) pulls a piece of the bone off rather tearing the ligament.

Avulsion: An avulsion is the result of a spraining type of injury where either a ligamentous or tendinous attachment pulls off a piece of the bone at its insertion site. Some avulsions will heal with rest and immobilization, others require surgical management.
