A dentist's degree.: There are two degrees that a dentist may have. Dds is the oldest and basically translates as doctor of dental surgery. The other degree you may encounter is dmd and this translates to doctor of medical dentistry. Both degrees are indicating the same thing- the holder has completed a basic dental education and training. Whichever degree is awarded is merely based upon which school you attended.

Dentist: Dds is doctor of dental surgery. Some dental schools prefer to give a dmd (doctor of dental medicine) which is an equivalent degree. Since dentistry involves much more than surgery/pulling teeth, many dentists feel that dental medicine is a more accurate description of dentistry today.

DDS: Stands for "doctor of dental surgery". Many dental schools now confer a dmd degree, which means, "doctor of medical dentistry", to reflect the changes in the educational process. Dentistry used to be more of a trade, but in the last hundred years or so, has emphasized much more science and medical knowledge.
