Are carbuncles only caused by ingrown hairs? i used to get carbuncles from ingrown hairs but are those the only things that can cause a carbuncle?

Yes: A carbuncle is a large area of multiple infected hair follicles. It was more common in past times before antibiotics. Infections of the hair follicles do not have to be associated with ingrown hairs.
