One can quit smoking: A person can recover from a smoking addiction. It takes a strong commitment, a healthy attitude towards life, support from friends and family (staying away from others who are smoking), and close follow-up with one's primary care doctor (who can help with temporary medications and nicotine patches, if needed).

Yes: If you stop, the damage to your lungs starts repairing itself almost immediately, and you will have more cough and more sputum as your lungs clean themselves out. If damage has already been done, healing of that may be limited, but more damage won't be done. The increased risk of heart disease and cancer can be almost completely reversed after 10 years of staying quit but this depends on how heavy.
