Can being born premature be genetic?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

Occasionally: In a few cases, premature birth may be due to hereditary/genetic factors, but causes for prematurity are often unknown. If 2 generations of women have very high blood pressure, pre-eclampsia can occur in pregnancy and cause prematurity. Maybe uterus/cervix shape and size are inherited, so if 2 generations of women have a short cervix, they may deliver prematurely. Drug/alcohol use can be familial.
