No: Most babies pass the meconium plug without intestinal tears. However, having a meconium plug is associated with other problems such as hirschsprung's disease (abnormal colon) and cystic fibrosis. Make sure your doctor knows about his meconium plug and any other symptoms he may have to make sure he doesn't have these diseases or other complications.

No: Meconium plug syndrome is caused by retention of thick meconium after birth. It presents with abdominal distension & absent stooling. It is usually diagnosed & treated with a contrast enema. In most cases, once this plug has passed, normal stool evacuation ensues. In cases where is doesn't, consideration is given to possible hirshsprung's disease or cystic fibrosis.

Not necessarily: Children with meconium plugs are treated with water soluble contrast enema as an infant to relieve GI obstruction and to make the diagnosis. Recta biopsy may be indicated if there are ongoing stooling issues to rule out hirschsprung's disease.
