None: Meconium aspiration syndrome (mas) should, itself, cause no long-term problems. Many children have transient respiratory symptoms from mas and completely recover. However, mas can be associated with very serious illness requiring prolonged mechanical ventilation and even heart-lung bypass. Outcomes in those infants depend primarily on their degree of illness and affected organs.

Possible problems: The important question to ask is why there was meconium in the amniotic fluid in the first place. Intrauterine stress can result in meconium release by the fetus. Low oxygen is a major reason for presence of meconium. Chronic low intrauterine oxygen levels are associated with learning & behavior problems later in life. Whether or not meconium was aspirated, the baby should be followed closely.

Two primary issues: Mas outcomes can be divided into 2 main issues:lung & development.Since meconium passage itself comes from prenatal stress, which is a risk factor for movement disorders (CP) & learning problems. The intensity of the lung disease/ventilation/ecmo need points to further problems with oxygen supply to the brain & can amplify those issues. The lung disease could be minimal & brief or bad & long term.
