What are the long-term effects if my baby had meconium aspiration syndrome? should i be worried about any particular disease or brain damage?

None: Meconium aspiration syndrome (mas) should, itself, cause no long-term problems. Many children have transient respiratory symptoms from mas and completely recover. However, mas can be associated with very serious illness requiring prolonged mechanical ventilation and even heart-lung bypass. Outcomes in those infants depend primarily on their degree of illness and affected organs.

Possible problems: The important question to ask is why there was meconium in the amniotic fluid in the first place. Intrauterine stress can result in meconium release by the fetus. Low oxygen is a major reason for presence of meconium. Chronic low intrauterine oxygen levels are associated with learning & behavior problems later in life. Whether or not meconium was aspirated, the baby should be followed closely.
