Occasionally: The funnel chest deformity is usually sporatic in appearance. It may relate to respiratory difficulties in early childhood and disappear when these resolve. In some cases the condition is part of a connective tissue disorder like Marfan syndrome which has a genetic component.( and many other issues).

Sometimes: A dent in the chest is usually a sign of pectus excavatum. It ocurrs about 1:1000 live births. Mostly it is sporadic and sometimes associated with curvature of the spine or even repair of diaphragmatic hernia.
