Without : Without a clinical exam you have not provided enough information to hazard a guess as to what your problem is. The first impression is that you might be brushing too aggressively in that area or that you are clenching you teeth for extended periods of time. You need to schedule an exam with you dentist to get to the bottom of the problem and to be given treatment recommendations.

An : An examination with your dentist is the place to start looking for your answers as to the cause and treatment options. Your gums can be sore for many different reasons including grinding your teeth, periodontal problems, and agressive brushing. Hard to tell your condition over the internet.

Is : Is it your gums that are sore or is it exposed areas on your tooth? First try using a soft toothbrush and a toothpaste for sensitive teeth. If you don't get significant relief your dentist can diagnose the problem.

You : You most likely have a condition called recession where the gum moves up (or down) to expose the tooth roots. If enamel has worn away, this can also cause senstivity to the teeth. Areas where tooth has worn away can cause senstivity to the gums if plaque or food debris gets trapped there. I suggest you see a dentist to have the condition evaluated. The teeth where eanmel has worn away can be filled and if the gum has receeded, a gum graft may be required.

Soreness: Soreness can be caused by gum recession and root exposure or by abfractions, small amounts of enamel chipping off at the gum line because of malocclusion. Please see a Dentist for a professional examination, differential diagnosis, and appropriate treatment plan. The scenario you describe requires appropriate treatment. Time alone, or coupled with OTC's, will not cure.
