Based : Based on your description, you may have a subperiosteal abscess. This is caused by food debris or a small piece of bone dying and setting up a late infection. You need to be evaluated by your oral surgeon. You may be placed on a trial of antibiotics. If this does not resolve the problem, you may need to have the site opened up and cleaned, a simple procedure that can be done awake. Don't delay as this infection can spread and become more serious and difficult to treat.

Abscess: This is the classic presentation for a subperiosteal abscess. Food debris gets trapped under the gums as they heal. This results in an infection in the tissue usually around 21 days but can occur up to 28 days. This usually only requires a course of antibiotics and you should be better in a day or so.
