Hi, : Hi, not necessarily. If she has a fever of 104, she should go to er. However, she has a predominant sore throat she should contact her doctor tommorrow as she may need a streph test. If she develops swelling in airway that would also lead to a recommendation that she be seen at the er.

Without : Without any information about your friend like age or what has been going on it is very difficult to advise you. With that said, a temperature of 101 is not something to be taken lightly.

This : This is difficult to answer since a fever by itself does not necessarily mean that there is something serious. Common viral infections including the flu (influenza) and bacterial strep throat or mononucleosis (mono) can cause a fever of 101. If the person has swollen glands (lymph nodes) in the neck, there is a good possibility that he or she has strep throat or mono (if in a younger age group). If the symptoms persist over the next 1-2 days, he or she should have a throat culture taken to rule out strep throat which can be treated with antibiotics. Certainly, if the fever is accompanied by bad headaches, sob, abdominal pain, or vomiting, he or she should seek prompt attention. Good luck.
