Bounces sound waves: An echocardiogram is simply an ultrasound. Like any other ultrasound, including those used by fishing boats, the fundamental principle is to send high-frequency sound waves into the target (heart) and measure the time it takes to return to the transducer (echo). The resulting picture is a measure of the distance traveled and the physical properties of the material it passed through.

Sound waves...: Echo or ultrasound uses sounds waves at various frequencies to bounce off of the tissue in the body. Depending on how these waves return to the transducer, the computer can make an image of the type, structure and density of the tissue being imaged. It is very similar to how bats navigate and find prey in the night.
