Since : Since you made a decision to spend the money, you might want to consider going to the specialist on extracting teeth, the oral surgeon. www.aaoms.org will have a link to a qualified oral surgeon near you. After the oral surgeon takes care of the problem, ask him/her to recommend a nice, reasonable dentist for your general needs, so that this type of emergency does not happen again.

I : I am not sure why the delay in treating the cause of your infection. There is no reason to delay treatment such as a root canal, extraction or gum therapy. Until the source of the infection is resolved with definitive treatment no amount of antibiotics will cause the infection to resolve. Seek a second opinion. If you know that the tooth requires extraction seek care from an oral and maxillofacial surgeon. www.aaoms.org.

Dr : Dr kaufman and dr funari gave you sound advice. I would strongly suggest you do what they suggest. You should not have had to wait that long. Sometimes stubborn infections can take a couple of rounds of antibiotics, which is usually no longer than 2 weeks. An oral surgeon may have to sedate you to get the tooth extracted, due to the infection. Good luck!
