Typically, : Typically, if indicated, all four wisdom teeth are extracted in one visit under IV sedation or light general anesthesia in the surgeons office. The surgical and anesthesia techniques have improved tremendously over the years to make this a safe procedure. As with any surgery or anesthesia, whether performed in a clinic or hospital there is a risk of complications. The most common ones are minor and easily dealt with, but others can be life threatening. Fortunately they are very rare. During the consultation appointment with the surgeon you will be told why the third molars should be extracted, the consequences if you don't have the surgery and any possible complication that could be associated with the surgery, this is called the informed consent process. This is the time to ask for precise answers to your questions. The reality is that retaining the wisdom teeth can be riskier than having the surgery to remove them. Oral and maxillofacial surgeons have an excellent tract record in performing both the surgery and anesthesia(it was a dentist that developed anesthesia for operations). Make sure you see a board certified oral and maxillofacial surgeon and that he has had his office certified by the state, if required, to perform anesthesia. Good luck.

See Below: Wisdom tooth removal is performed thousands of times daily in the us. It is very safe. An IV is started in much the same way that blood is drawn for a lab test. The IV is usually removed when the patient is well along in the recovery area. In the majority of cases, all four wisdom teeth are removed at the same appointment. Removing all at once is not a risk for morbidity/mortality.
