Menstruation : Menstruation may be irregular in the first year or two after the first period because it may take a year or two for ovulation to follow a regular cycle. Some women are regular, but follow a shorter cycle (3 weeks instead of 4) or a longer cycle (5 or 6 weeks). This is also normal. If she continues to have irregular periods 2 years after starting menstruation, you may want to contact her doctor.

Menstrual : Menstrual periods are often irregular when a girl starts bleeding. The menses are irregular because she does not ovulate (release an egg) regularly. The menstrual cycle revolves around ovulation and getting pregnant. If the girl/woman does not become pregnant then the cycle starts over after shedding the uterine lining (menses). When the menstrual cycle does not include ovulation then the hormones do not lead to menstrual shedding. This is normal and nothing to worry about. If the irregular cycles are very heavy or causing her significant emotional stress then se your gynecologist. The gynecologist can discuss possible solutions. For example, the oral contraceptive is a great medication to regulate cycles and she might benefit from using them to normalize the cycles. I hope this information is helpful. Best wishes to you and your daughter.
