He : He does have a problem. His body has developed tolerance to alcohol. Over time, it has taken more alcohol to have the same impact, which is why he is now drinking more. My guess is that he spends a lot of time drinking, getting drinks or sleeping it off. Alcohol is the number one reason for isomnia in this country. Kind of ironic, since so many people use if to fall asleep. What i recommend is that you look into a group called "alanon", it is for people who have loved ones that are alcholic. It will provide you with support, knowledge and improved coping skills. You can find it in the yellow pages. Take care.

He needs help now: He is clearly physically dependent on alcohol, and it appears to be taking over both his and your life. He needs to have a formal detox, cold turkey could cause seizures and dts, as well as very high blood pressure and other problems. I strongly suggest you consider alanon, a self-help program for loved ones (white pages of phone book or online). You can tell him you care;he needs to get help.

In addition: To having an addiction, your husband's use of alcohol to sleep does not work. He may fall asleep, but may wake up and not be able to get back to sleep. Get him to go for help , detox and inpatient stay may be necessary, followed by AA and psychotherapy.
