Average : Average patient will use walker or crutches 4-6 weeks then transition to cane or no assistive devices. By 6 weeks, most patients are happy with their progress and pain relief but aren't quite up to normal walking speed. At three months, most patients should be walking normally. Improvement will continue for 1-2 years depending on level of pre-surgery disability. Patients can enhance recovery and overall benefits with exercises as prescribed by your physician and/or physical therapist. Of course, it also depends on the patient's overall health and motivation.
